Tossing and turning, stressing as each minute passes, insomnia can suck the life out of us. Sleep not only feels good but is crucial for our bodies to function optimally. It supports everything from hormone regulation to productivity. But what can we do when we need to fall asleep fast? Here are 3 tips that induce sleep in 5 minutes or less.
- Lavender Oil
Lavender oil isn’t just great for our skin. Yes, it can effectively calm inflamed skin, but the soothing scent also induces sleep by reducing blood pressure, heart rate and how fast we breathe. It does this by altering the brain waves used to regulate our muscles. Lavender is good at helping release tension stored in our muscles due to the stresses of daily living. For times when it’s hard to get your brain to wind down, try sniffing some lavender oil or better yet, add a couple drops in a bottle with water and spray your pillow and sheets before going to bed. The scent will fill your room and linger as you drift softly to sleep.
- CBD oil
CBD oil for sleep can be an even more effective solution than lavender oil as it works on regulating the hormones that promote sleep. When adrenaline and cortisol are high and melatonin is low, our body is awake whether we like it or not. To help the body relax, stop consuming stimulants like the caffeine in coffee and chocolate at least 6 hours before bed and cut back on sugar at dinnertime as the energy spike may keep you up. Then, try a CBD oil tincture that is designed for sleep. The cannabinoid interacts with the brain and nervous system to reduce feelings of stress, worry and even chronic pain. All factors that can make going to sleep difficult. Luckily, this oil will help you fall asleep and have you wake up refreshed unlike taking capsules of melatonin that can leave people waking up feeling sluggish and hung over.
- Listen Up
Did you ever fall asleep in high school physics class? Yup, me too. When we were kids, we’d get bedtime stories before going to sleep, now, as adults we have spa music, guided meditations and podcasts. It’s all about finding a calming sound that will help the mind unwind and let go of stress. If the mind is racing, it’s nearly impossible to relax and fall asleep. The goal is to listen to something that will captivate your imagination enough to distract you from the day’s worries but not overstimulate you or intrigue you to the extent that you want to hear what will happen next. Try a science podcast. The environment, microbes and animals are interesting but not as riveting as a true crime story (at least for me).
Try these 3 simple tips to fall asleep in 5 minutes or less and notice how you wake up rejuvenated and ready for your day.
